Dr. Öner Demirel, is a Professor at the Department of Landscape Architecture, School of Forestry, Karadeniz Technical University. He earned his MS from Aegean University (İzmir-Turkey) in 1988 and received his PhD from Karadeniz Technical University in the field of tourism and recreation planning in 1997. He has a long experience of international cooperation with French speaking countries i.e. with Belgium, France and Switzerland as well as USA. In addition, he participated in a project as a Collaborating Researcher about Rural Recreation and Ecotourism at the Department of Recreation Management and Tourism of Arizona State University between August 2001- June 2002. Between August 2011-February 2012 he received an International Research Project Support to carry out research on the subject of Visitor Impact Management at Northern Arizona University in the US.
His studies mostly focus on the recreational and touristic uses of natural and cultural resources of our country and the evaluation of these uses. His currently research interest is Urban Design and Green Network Planning and Nature Conservation Planning. He is involved in several projects dealing with urban rehabilitation studies and landscape planning in cities. He has volunteered for Environment and Nature Protection Associations and Non-Governmental Organizations and has served a director.
